Even though the heat index was well into the 90s on Tuesday, September 4, several area residents came out to tour the barns during the St. Catharine Farm 2018 Field Day
Dr. Steve Higgins of the UK College of Agriculture, along with Farm Manager Danny Ray Spalding, led the tour, informing the group about the construction of the new compost-bedding barn from the initial planning to the introduction of the cows. Other speakers for the evening were Warren Bealer, Director of the Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy; Matt Norfleet, NRCS District Conservationist; Kimberly Bartley of the UK Division of Conservation; and Sr. Charlene Moser, Co-Director of the Office of Founded Ministries of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, who informed those present about advancements in agriculture, programs available and the history of the farm.
There were booths set up with information available from Central Kentucky Ag. Credit, Whayne Equipment, Washington County Conservation District, Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund, and Washington County Extension Office. A delicious meal was served with the Washington County Cattlemen grilling up hamburgers and hotdogs. Thanks to everyone who assisted in any way to make this event a success!
